Everything You Need to Know About C Batteries in NZ
Are you wondering what type C batteries are and how they are used? While you might be familiar with AA and AAA batteries, C batteries are less common, but it is still important to be aware of them.
Scott Electrical has created this guide to help you discover everything that you need to know about C batteries in NZ and what you can expect from them. Let’s dive right in!
What are C Batteries?
C batteries, also known as R14s or C LR14 batteries, are a type of dry cell battery that is commonplace in NZ and across the world. C batteries are designed for longevity and reliability, lasting longer than other dry cell battery types like AA and AAA.
C batteries can come in different capacities, but their size often remains the same. Larger than AA and AAA batteries, C batteries are 50mm/1.97 inches in length and 26.2mm/1.03 inches in diameter.
What are the Types of C Batteries?
Here are the two most common types of C batteries available:
- Alkaline – uses an alkaline electrolyte of potassium hydroxide; one of the most widely used types of batteries with a long shelf life, found in many household items
- Lithium – uses lithium as the central conductor, also distinguished for their long lifespan*
*Not to be confused with lithium-ion (rechargeable) batteries.
Nonetheless, C batteries are also available in a rechargeable format (i.e lithium-ion, nickel-cadmium (NiCd), nickel-metal hydride (NiMH)).
What are C Batteries Used for?
As mentioned previously, C batteries are available in different capacities depending on what they are used for. The most common uses and applications of C batteries can be categorised according to their voltage:
- 1.5V (standard): remote controls, toys, radios, flashlights, other household items
- 3V (professional, moderate drain): gas detectors, smart gas meter etc.
- 3.6V (commercial and industrial, often lithium): automatic meter readers, buoys, etc.
