Here’s Everything You Need to Know About DC Circuit Breakers

DC circuit breakers are very clever tools that are super important safety features. They’re also very common but most people have never heard of them before. If you’re wondering what’s so special about them, keep reading for a full rundown of everything you need to know about DC circuit breakers.

What is it and how does it work?

The role of a DC circuit breaker within an electrical system is really quite simple. Their purpose is to automatically shut off the power when a circuit is at risk of becoming overloaded. This is important  because it protects the electrical circuit and all the devices using the power from damage. They’re really clever because as soon as the breaker detects a fault, it interrupts the electrical flow immediately.

Unlike a fuse which tends to blow if it gets overheated, a circuit breaker can be reset. When too many things are using the power (think extension leads), a circuit breaker will do just what the name suggests - break the circuit and protect the devices plugged into the power.

You can get loads of different sized circuit breakers, some large enough to power whole streets, and some so small they’re just protecting individual appliances.

When are they used?

Computers have circuit breakers because sudden surges in power can destroy a computer. A power bar with a built-in circuit breaker will protect it.

Some DC circuit breakers in NZ can automatically reset, but the majority will need to be manually reset. Once you flip the switch, they will operate as before - unless it’s a computer. This will need to be restarted.

Some appliances need to be turned off before resetting the circuit breaker, though. If you have several things plugged into the same outlet, maybe a computer, electrical fan and the oven, you might need to turn off the fan so the other two appliances can function without becoming overloaded again.
